Verdun Wiki

The Winchester Model 1897 was utterly devastating when used within an enemy trench. European military leaders on both sides considered shotgun use to be ‘barbaric’. German forces would often execute U.S soldiers caught with shotguns or shotgun ammunition.
– Official Verdun Weapon Guide[1]

The M1897 trench gun is a Winchester shotgun used solely by members of the Marines. While the weapon is extremely powerful at close range, sending forth a hail of pellets on each pull of the trigger, it is extremely inaccurate at medium to long range.

The M1897 is available to the U.S. Marines.[2]
