Squad Gameplay

Verdun is a cooperative game in its very core. The game is built around squads consisting of 4 players. Central to the co-operative gameplay is the so called “co-op xp” which is earned whenever you play together with another player. The more co-op xp you have with the squad members, the more powerful the squad will be.

Squad types

Each squad has a distinct type that is based on a historical unit. Thus, a squad type has plenty of unique characteristics that result in different strategies on the battlefield. In Verdun you fight in a squad under the banner of either of the two Alliances; Entente or Central powers.

Each squad type has two abilities that all its members obtain when they choose to play as part of the squad. These abilities make sure the squad gets additional incentive to perform its task. For instance, the poilu squad will have “Rifle Training”, which increases bolt-action rifle performance and “Discipline” which encourages capturing more sectors.

Squad Roles

Within each squad type, there are 4 unique roles to choose from which are specific to that squad and the role it has on the battlefield. Each role gets unique attire, weapons and abilities. The attire is based on the nation the squad is fighting for and its historical unit. The selection of weapons for the role are based on its task (Grenadier will receive grenades for instance).

Squad levels

Squads are able to level up. The squad level is determined by how well the members of the squad are able to work together. This is expressed in co-op xp. Between each individual squad member, co-op xp points are earned.

Gametypes

Verdun will feature a number of squad-based multiplayer gametypes. These game modes include:

  1. Frontlines:  This game mode is inspired by the characteristic trench warfare of the First World War. It allows players to experience true trench warfare. The game map is divided into many trench sectors which can be captured by either side. This creates a real time moving frontline where every captured meter counts. A faction wins by holding onto the majority of the trenches or by wiping the enemy from the map by taking all trenchlines.
  2. Offensive: In offensive the map is divided into several consecutive sectors. The attacking team has to push back the defenders sector by sector to gain victory.
  3. Last stand: In this gamemode, you and your squad are outnumbered and have to fight against a horde of players.

Free for all: Verdun also features a classic free for all game mode. The WWI weaponry give this game mode a twist since the main weapons used are bolt action rifles. This makes free for all in Verdun a return to the era of the popular rifle-only mods.

Environments

The environments in Verdun are based on real world battlefields or trench maps. We took great inspiration from visiting the actual battle sites to observe their characteristics. These can be found back in the maps.

  1. Vauquois: A dense trench network set around a huge mine crater. Over the years multiple attacks and counter attacks left their marks creating an elaborate maze of trenches, craters and machine gun nests. This map is inspired by the les esparges, vauquois hill and haute chevauchee mine craters we visited around the verdun area.
  2. Argonne: An environment created from actual trench maps. The map is loosely based on the four-de-paris area in the Argonne forest north-west of Verdun. This map features a French and German trench system with a no-mans land in between resembling a classic WWI trench warfare scenario.
  3. Vosges: Set in the rocky and wooded Vosges mountains where heavy fighting occurred this map features challenging heights and natural obstacles.
  4. Caures: Based on the first day of the battle of Verdun. Recreated from trench maps this map combines open field warfare with dense, close-combat forest engagements and trench warfare.

Later maps will include iconic locations such as fort Douaumont and Vaux, where fighting indoors will be part of the gameplay.

Weapons & Attachments

Verdun will feature authentic weapons used by the respective nations in the first world war. We took great care in modeling these weapons from real world examples and photos. Weapons that make their appearance are:

  • Rifles: Gewehr ‘98, M93 Lebel, 07/15 Berthier, M16 Berthier Carbine, K98AZ
  • Pistols: P08 Luger, Ruby
  • Light Machine Guns: MG 08/15, Chauchat
  • Grenades: M15 Stielhandgranate, F1
  • Misc: Vengeur trench knife, M1887 Trench shovel

Verdun has an advanced weapon attachment system which will make it possible for the following attachments to be used:

  • Bayonets: M1898/05 Seitengewehr, M1886 “Rosalie” bayonet
  • Riflegrenades: VB rifle grenade, M17 gewehrgranate
  • Scopes: APX Mle1917
  • Misc: Chauchat “cache-flamme” muzzle suppressor.
